6th Grade Art meets for ten consecutive weeks. Students work in the four aspects of art: creating, presenting, responding and connecting. Knowledge and skills taught in the elementary program are reviewed, but with additional emphasis on quality craftsmanship. Classroom expectations encourage the child to develop self-reliance. Assignments and protocols are designed to address organizational skills, time management, and perseverance. The child is encouraged to follow an idea from beginning to end.
genre scenes
Students studied the works of Dutch genre painters Jan Steen and Johannes Vermeer in order to analyze
how they created the illusion of space and distance. Then, 6th grade artists drew their own genre scenes with an emphasis on personal experience. You'll see scenes from home, school and everyday places. This was a very challenging task, but hard work made for success.
